Meta Description Generator

Type in what the page is about, name your primary keyword, pick a tone, and get four meta description drafts with a live character count on each one.

About this tool

The four drafts come from a set of sentence patterns, not a language model. Your topic and keyword are slotted into templates chosen by the tone you selected, so the same inputs always produce the same output. Treat them as a starting shape you edit rather than finished copy you paste.

Each card counts its own characters and turns green between 120 and 160, which is the range that usually survives Google’s truncation. Copy the one that reads closest to your page, then swap in your real product noun and the specific promise you actually make.

Everything runs in your browser — nothing you enter here is sent to a server or stored. Provided as is, without warranty.

How to write a meta description worth the click

A meta description does not move your ranking. It moves the decision a searcher makes once you are already on the page of results, which is a different job entirely. Ten blue links all claim to solve the same problem, and the two lines underneath your title are your only chance to say why yours is the one worth opening. Founders tend to write these last, in a hurry, and it shows.

The pattern that works is narrower than most advice suggests. Say what the thing is in the first six or seven words, because that is all a phone screen reliably shows. Put the primary keyword early, since matching terms get emboldened and give the eye somewhere to land. Then spend the rest of the budget on one concrete detail nobody else can copy: a number, a constraint, a specific integration. “Free forever for under 10k pageviews” beats “the best analytics for growing businesses” every time.

Here is the caveat that catches people out. Google rewrites meta descriptions on roughly two-thirds of results, pulling a passage from your page body instead when it thinks that passage answers the query better. Your carefully written 155 characters may never be shown. That is not a reason to skip writing them, but it does change the priority order: the on-page copy near the top of the article is doing at least as much work as the tag, so make sure the opening paragraph would read acceptably as a snippet on its own.

Also stop counting characters as if the limit were a character limit. It is a pixel limit, roughly 920px on desktop and less on mobile, so a description full of capital letters and wide characters truncates earlier than one made of narrow lowercase words. Aiming at 150 rather than 160 buys you the margin. Once the snippet is settled, run the page body through the readability test to check the copy behind the promise is as plain as the promise itself, and if you are writing these at scale, our blog covers how we approach content for products we build.
