About this tool
For growth the answer is the new figure divided by the old one. For a decline the tool inverts the division, so a drop from 300 to 100 reads as 3.00x decrease rather than 0.33x, which is how people actually say it out loud. The multiple is shown to two decimal places and labelled as an increase or a decrease.
Zeros and mixed signs are rejected on purpose. You cannot be any number of times larger than zero, and comparing a negative figure with a positive one as a multiple gives an answer that looks plausible and means nothing.

Multiples versus percentages, and when to use which
Multiples and percentages describe the same movement in different registers. Going from 100 to 300 is a 3x increase, a 200% increase and a 300% of baseline, all at once. That third phrasing is where the confusion starts, because “300% of” and “300% increase” differ by a factor of three and people use them interchangeably in the same sentence. The reliable rule: a 3x increase is a 200% increase, because the percentage counts only the part that was added. If a number in a deck makes you hesitate, restate it as a multiple and see whether it still sounds like the claim being made.
Multiples earn their place when the change is large. Nobody parses “a 1,400% increase” quickly, but 15x lands immediately, which is why board decks and fundraising material reach for it. Percentages are better below roughly a doubling: a 12% rise is clear, whereas 1.12x makes readers stop and do arithmetic. Below about 1.5x, use percentages. Above about 3x, use multiples. The middle is a judgement call, and the honest move is to pick whichever framing you would also use if the number had gone the other way.
The caveat that trips up small teams is the low base. A jump from 2 paying customers to 10 is a genuine 5x, and it is also eight customers. Multiples flatter small starting numbers, so a metric that begins near zero will always produce the most impressive growth figure in the business, and pointing at it repeatedly is a good way to lose credibility with anyone who checks. Whenever you quote a multiple, quote the absolute numbers alongside it. If you would be uncomfortable saying “from 2 to 10”, you should be uncomfortable saying 5x.
One more thing worth checking: multiples over successive periods do not add up, they compound. Three consecutive months of 2x growth is 8x over the quarter, not 6x, and averaging monthly multiples will overstate the real rate.
